First-generation Compact Laminate is an authentic, high-density phenolic board manufactured by pressing multiple layers of kraft paper—impregnated with phenolic resin—under high temperature and ultra-high pressure; it features a dense, layered structure and is a high-quality engineering panel.

Second-generation Compact Laminate is a fiber-based imitation product made by pressing plant fibers with adhesive; it lacks the kraft paper layer structure and is manufactured using a process similar to that of medium-density fiberboard (MDF), merely mimicking the appearance of genuine Compact Laminate while offering inferior overall performance.

 

Appearance and Methods of Identification

First-generation Compact Laminates are dense and heavy; their cross-sections are solid black and fine-grained, revealing distinct kraft paper layers and a compact texture.

Second-generation Compact Laminates are lighter; their cross-sections appear grayish-black with a visible fibrous, granular texture, lack layering, and have a relatively rough feel.

Key performance differences

First-generation Compact Laminate is waterproof, moisture-resistant, impact-resistant, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant, offering a long service life; its cut edges require no sealing and are impervious to moisture. It features excellent fire resistance and stability, making it suitable for long-term use in damp or wet environments.

Second-generation Compact Laminate is waterproof only on the surface; its internal fibers readily absorb moisture, making the material prone to swelling, blistering, and delamination in humid conditions. It requires complete edge sealing, and its durability, impact resistance, and fire resistance are inferior to those of the first generation.

 

Material Selection and Application Scenarios

First-Generation Compact Laminate: Suitable for high-standard projects—such as public restroom partitions in schools, hospitals, and stadiums, as well as laboratory worktops—that involve high foot traffic, high humidity, and long-term use; it offers reliability, durability, and a low repair rate.

Second-Generation Compact Laminate: Offers high cost-effectiveness but is suitable only for dry indoor applications, such as office partitions and interior decorative wall panels; it is not recommended for use in humid public areas.

For damp projects, long-term commercial use, and high-standard projects, choose the first-generation Compact Laminate; for dry indoor spaces with limited budgets for ordinary decoration projects, the second-generation Compact Laminate can be selected. Choosing materials as needed can effectively avoid engineering quality issues.
